The Aware Families Podcast

The Aware Families Podcast wants to educate parents, grandparents and kids of all ages on how to stay healthy using the principles of Functional Medicine. Episodes are hosted by a pediatric physician (Tom Flass MD) and a family nurse practitioner (Brittany Coburn NP-C) who are trained in both conventional and functional medicine. As experienced healthcare providers and parents, they have navigated the challenges of the modern world with their own families and patients and share what they have learned along the way. A range of topics that impact our health are covered, including nutrition, sleep, stress and mental health, exercise and physical activity, toxic exposures, gut health, hormones and a lot more. This podcast strives to deliver real-world actionable health information to people looking to improve their lives and the lives of their families.
Brittany and Tom do an overview of how Functional Medicine looks at thyroid function and dysfunction. We look at upstream and downstream impacts on thyroid function and how it affects our health.
Optimal thyroid function is important for our health, but often the problem is not with the thyroid gland itself, but other areas that are impacting the thyroid's ability to function.
Rather than just going straight to thyroid medication or a glandular supplement, a provider really needs to look at what could be affecting thyroid function- including nutritional deficiencies, toxic exposures, disturbances in the gut microbiome and leaky gut, autoimmune processes, as well as problems with the Six Pillars, especially sleep and stress!
This is meant to be an initial review to get people thinking about thyroid in a more functional holistic way.
